Birders, (Apologies for lumping a whole week of sightings in one post.)
In our west Ames backyard we still have three Red-breasted Nuthatches visiting the feeders (two females at once today and an intermittent male) along with two pairs of Purple Finches and up to six Pine Siskins. Wednesday on Iowa State's campus the Ornithology class had fly-over Trumpeter Swans (two - uncollared) and three Great Blue Herons. In Pammel Woods I had Brown Creeper, Eastern Phoebe, several Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and one Golden-crowned Kinglet. Students also observed Yellow-rumped Warblers and the Pied-billed Grebe persists on Lake Laverne. The most interesting sighting (in my opinion) is a Gray Eastern Screech-Owl that according to one person has been roosting in a drain in Lagomarcino for several weeks. Tyler Harms, Molly Gillespie, and myself observed it sitting in the sun on Wednesday afternoon. The drain is on the southwest side of the building facing Science I, near the roofline.
