I checked out Dave Eastman's report of western grebe at Prairie Lakes in
Cedar Falls this evening. I concur with his identification. The bird was
near the south end of the large south lake. Although it stayed tucked
most of the short time that I was out scoping it, it offered good scope
views when it roused and swam about. I am pretty sure that I have never
seen this species in Black Hawk County before. Also present on the lake
were at least 7 horned grebes, a common loon, bufflehead, and many ruddy
ducks and lesser scaup.
