Last evening, I pulled my kayak out of storage and headed to Dunbar Slough. Black Terns were numerous. I found 4 Ruddy Turnstones perched on some tree limbs. The tree had fallen over years ago in the middle of the wetland. I suppose it was as safe a place as any to perch. I heard an American Bittern at the back of the wetland but could not see it. Two beavers were making their presence known by slapping the water with their tails.
This morning, I drove along the railroad tracks west of Highway 71 in Carroll to look for the Blue Grosbeaks that Rob Thelen reports every year. Sure enough, I found one singing from a perch on a power pole.
