We drove over by Nebraska City last night to see how high the water had risen
on the Missouri and stopped at Waubonsie Wildlife Area.
We found a roost of over 50 Great Egrets, over 300 Cattle Egrets and I could
hear Black-crowned Night Heron's calling. I'm not sure if
there is a rookery there but it will probably be under water within a week due
to the flooding.
I found a Neotropic Cormorant in the same area just off County Rd. 250th
Street. I found 4 Little Blues flying east when we were leaving the area.
There were also 25 Great Egrets at Secret Lake.
The businesses at the truck stop area at the intersection of I-29 and Hwy 2 all
have levees around them now and the east-bound lane of Hwy 2 is
down to one lane.
There is a displaced Common Night Hawk roosting on a pile of former roofing
material behind a school down the street in Shenandoah. The building had the
flat roof replaced with a pitched roof. The bird doesn't want to leave. He's
dedicated to this spot. You can walk within two feet and he'll just hiss at
you and not budge.
