We seem to be off and running. Another 140 raptors today of ten species for
Ryan and Don and Janis Paseka. 68 Broad-winged Hawks (so far a banner year for
that species at HNCH) led the way. Highlight was another strong early showing
for Merlins with 6. Non-raptor flight was dominated by American White Pelicans
(300). The Red-headed Woodpecker flight has been terrible again this year--
though not quite as abysmal as last year. Still , we are running down 80-90%
of what we were averaging a few years ago.This is getting worrying. Are people
seeing fewer around? Are the declines that occurred east of the Mississippi
beginning to be felt out here? Or is just a coincidence of weather, etc?

=============

Pretty slow up there when I left at 2pm, but Ryan had recorded another
Mississippi Kite, an early Merlin, and our first Sharp-shinned Hawk of the
season.
