Like Jacob, I too had a pretty amazing close encounter with a Ruby-throat. Wednesday, I stopped Stutsman's Elevator in Hills to buy some bird seed. I was paying someone came into the office from the warehouse saying something about a baby hummingbird on a pallet. A couple of people from the office followed him out and after a delay I thought what the devil, and took off after them, thinking this is not hummingbird habitat. After we got there, there was a little front end loader beside a pallet full of big bags of seed. And on the bags a little hummingbird. http://www.pbase.com/xiboia/image/138092063 I believe it was a young bird, as its bill seemed short, although comparing pictures, I am no longer sure of that. It had a some fluffy feathers on its coverts. These feathers look sort of frosty on the picture although in person they looked buffier. It had some striping on the throat. There was cobwebs in its bill and feather and feat. I told the people that we needed to get some fluids in it and asked if they had a suger packet that we could dissolve in water. They did and with a straw, we offered it some sugar-water. It took some in and at times were pleased to to let me take it someone with rehab license. It drank at least once more. Alas it died sometime later.
