Was at Beaver Bottoms Wetland on Monday morning and had 6 nighthawks (at one
time) buzzing about 15ft above my head (and around the ponds) as they hawked
bugs..

It was great to get such close looks..

Subject: [ia-bird] Swainson's Hawk

Hi All,

While outside a bit after 4 this afternoon, I happened to glance up and
watch a handful of Turkey Vultures flying high over my backyard in Ankeny. I
became intrigued and decided to stare at the sky for the next 20 minutes.
Just a couple of minutes after the TVs passed, I picked out an adult
light-morph Swainson's Hawk at an even higher altitude and moving south at a
rapid clip, albeit allowing a fantastic view for about 30 seconds. My
"hawkwatch" turned up zilch after that, but a pair of Common Nighthawks put
on an aerial show as they hawked dragonflies over my neighborhood for the
remainder of my time outside.

That said, a group of 19 Common Nighthawks passed over (moving southeast)
about an hour later.

Keep looking up!
