On the way to see the Snowy Owl at the Eastern Iowa Airport, we saw 3 Horned
Larks. In between focusing on the owl, we saw a very handsome and acrobatic
male Northern Harrier fly past.

As we were getting ready to go this morning, a male House Finch was singing
loud and long in a neighbor's tree. A female on our garage roof put in her
answering cluck. I also heard a male chickadee doing his fee-beee call,
right on time as it is mid-January. A Carolina Wren stopped by several times
this week. There is one Downy Woodpecker female who is a regular at the fat
feeder outside my study window and in the backyard. She is slightly bigger
all over (including her beak) than the other Downy's that we see regularly,
but not nearly as big as a Hairy. I know that many bird within a species get
bigger as one moves north and west in North America. I wonder if she is a
visitor from further north.
