Yesterday, four of us from ISU (Mica Rumbach, Corey Lange, Paul Skrade, and I)
birded from Ames to Spirit Lake and back. At Beemer's Pond there were 9
waterfowl species including 210 Trumpeter Swans and 3 adult Tundra Swans. Next,
we looked for but did not find the White-winged Crossbills in Algona. However,
a short time later we found a flock of 7 White-winged Crossbills at a small
cemetery in extreme SE Dickinson Co. at the junction of 240th Street and 330th
Avenue. Then, we relocated one of the Snowy Owls (a very dark juvenile female)
just east of the junction of 240th Street and 240th Avenue southeast of
Milford. There were lots of Horned Larks and Lapland Longspurs along the
roadsides with a few Snow Buntings.
