Made the trek up to the Polk City area this afternoon (1/24.) Went with the past sightings, and headed over to 118th and 26th.
I headed east from 44th on 118th. As I was driving along, I spotted a bird on the wire on the north side of the road. I quickly turned around and headed back. It was holding a small rodent. I believe it was a Kestrel, but it also could've been an owl. Unfortunately, I startled it and it took off on the other side of the road and I lost sight of it. I traveled south all the way to 110th. Nothing. Turned around and headed back north. Was just barely moving forward when the snowy came out of the field to the east, flew over the road (about 30 yards in front of me) to the field on the west. Only saw it while it was in flight. Couldn't find it after it landed. Looked like it landed in amongst a bunch of brush, etc. that is in that field. I was using binoculars too. :( When I was heading back west on 118th, I saw a bird that was a similar size to the bird I had seen previously back on the wire, without the rodent. --- Please contribute your sightings to our list; it is only as good as members make it! --- Birding channel recommendation for FRS/GMRS radio use: Primary selection; channel 5/0 , alternate selection; channel 6/0 --- This mailing list is sponsored by the Iowa Ornithologists' Union.
