Thanks to Eugene and Eloise Armstrong who spotted the bird, I was able to
spend a great morning watching the owl. It spent most of its time sitting
on a small drift of snow along an east-west fence line about mid field,
but would occasionally fly up to sit on the fence posts too. A male
Northern Harrier hawk flew within feet of the owl and a flock of 6-7 swans
also flew low right over it but it never reacted to either beyond simply
watching them. It was located just north of Ankeny off Irvindale Dr. (also
called NW 16th) on NW 134th Ave. Very close to the Alleman towers. From NW
16th street you turn west on 134th Ave. and go approximately 1/4 mile. The
bird was in the north facing field among the corn stubble. Tom Lyle was
also there taking pictures.
