Ducks on Coralville Res: I hiked the 1 mile through the woods to the point across from the Macbride Dam. Underneath there were a small flock of ducks. I should have lugged the scope in because in the dim, hazy light I could not be sure of the species. There was 4 larger ducks, probably Common Mergansers, and 3 or 4 much smaller ducks. My initial impression was Ring-necked Duck, but on thinking about it believe they were Common Goldeneyes. These birds would be visible from the MacBride Dam but might be around the corner from the Fishery Parking lot and ramp.
Spring is Coming: Lots of noises in the woods today. I heard at least 4 different Black-capped Chickadee vocalizations, plus Pileated giving an odd call in which every couple of notes had more emph behind it. And the corvids seem ready to celebrate. Blue Jays are making all sorts of noises, the bell like noise, a couple of versions of the jay call [one more raspy than the other], and one neighborhood crow is giving a pretty fine Red-tail imitation. Crows seem primed too, with lots of noises, including the stuttery bell like noise they make while bowing and flaring there wings.
