I had a handsome junco on my deck right outside my kitchen window this
morning. I am about 95% sure it was an Oregon Junco, a life bird for me.
It had the distinctive black hood and brown flanks. Fortunately, it flew
before my cat got it! I thought I had seen one a few days ago, but hadn't
gotten another glimpse to confirm.

Has anyone else seen one of these this winter? How common are they for
Iowa?

I also had a good view of a barred owl which I flushed this morning on an
early morning walk on a trail through mature oak woods. Fun. It kept
flying from tree to tree, nervous to have me around. It called once.
