A late morning visit to Weise Slough.

Fox sparrow - one pair FOY

Gadwall - one m/f pair

Blue-winged teal - 6+

Ring-necked duck - 30+

American Wigeon - 6+

Northern Shovelers

Painted turtles - counted almost 30 sitting on branches sticking out of the
water sunning themselves

As I was about to leave the slough I spotted an American Woodcock in the
middle of the road. I approached slowly in my car, but it did not seem the
least concerned. It stood and rocked back and forth, slowly walked to the
side of the road, continuing the rocking behavior. Is that common for this
bird? It's the first I've ever seen. I eventually drove slowly by it,
passing within 2 feet of the bird, failing to flush.

Saulsbury Bridge wetland around 1:00 PM

E. Phoebe - FOY

Hooded Merganser - 5 f/m pair plus single male

Kai Weatherman

Iowa City
