Hi all,
Yesterday (3/21) I found Smith's Longspurs at a location in Johnson County
where I saw my first record of this species on March 13, 1983.
Even though I have looked at that location many other years, this is the first
time I have seen them there since. The location is roughly 3 miles
east of Hills. Specifically, the field is corn stubble on the east side of
Sioux Avenue about a half mile south of Johnson Co. F-62. As I
approached the area there was one bird sitting on the fence on the east side of
Sioux Ave. and it obliged by staying put for a minute or two.
It then flew into the corn stubble, and later a flock estimated at 20-25 birds
flew up, circled and dropped back into that field.
Good birding,
Jim Fuller
