I did a little birding around my area this morning. Highlights were Smith's Longspurs and Brewer's Blackbirds at Diehl Ponds in Warren Co. I also had two Common Loons (1 alt, 1 basic) and a few singing Field Sparrows (FOY) at Maffitt Reservoir in SW Des Moines. It appears the first push of cormorants is occurring through this area. On my way home from work on Friday, there were 200+ Double-crested Cormorants at Hallett Pits in West Des Moines. I also observed several groups of them heading that way over Walnut Woods SP this morning. Good birding...
