We saw a male and female Mottled Duck this evening at Forney Lake, first
reported by Ross Silcock yesterday. We watched them from 6:50 until about 7:15
when it started pouring rain. The ducks climbed out of the water onto a low
mound in the middle of the lake. They remained on the mound while they
preened. The male was very aggressive toward other birds that came near the
mound. There was a Great Egret present and about 12 Bonaparte's Gulls, along
with 14 other species of ducks and geese, and hundreds of American White
Pelicans.
