This morning I found 20 species of waterfowl in the area including a small mixed flock of Snow Geese with Greater White-fronted Geese at Dan Green Slough, and there were four Horned Grebes including one still in basic plumage at Elk Lake in Clay county.
I walked three good fields for Smith's Longspur but apparently Karen is not letting them leave the Neal Smith Refuge yet. I did have a flock of nine Am Pipits at Dewey's Pasture though. Small numbers of Rusty Blackbirds were in a couple of locations and Great-tailed Grackles were nosing around a couple of marshes. There were lots of Pectoral Sandpipers at Virgin Lake mudflats along with the two yellowleg cousins and, of course, Killdeer but no other shorebirds yet.
