I'm sure someone has seen this...these things likely happen from time to
time, but I "think" its a "first ever" find for me. We have an American
Robin nesting on the ground in our south pasture...has 3 eggs in the
nest right now. Cannot believe the Skunks or Raccoons haven't found it
yet! (Its right along the fence line and there's a path passing right
past it - within inches.
I saw the robin sitting there about a week ago when I passed...it was a
sunny day and it seemed odd sitting there ((didn't register "nesting")
but thought, in passing, maybe it was just sunning itself. This
afternoon my wife and I passed by and the robin flushed and we took a
look...sure enough aground nest and 3 eggs. I found a Great Horned Owl
nesting on the ground down in Kansas about 35 years ago but that was the
last time I remember seeing someone ground nesting that wasn't supposed to!
Will have to keep watch and see if it gets lucky...it'll need it!
