Hi All,
The three recent reports of Red Crossbills in the state has been most
interesting in light of an invasion of
Red Crossbills in the summer of 1996. At that time, the earliest report was
from July 13-14 of ten birds near Iowa City, and
the last report was from Humboldt County on August 25. During the intervening
period there were an
additional 27 reports to the Iowa RBA, and five more came in as seasonal field
reports. Almost all these reports were of birds
visiting sunflower and niger feeders. Thus, there may be more sightings to come
in 2012. An article outlining "A Summer
Invasion of Red Crossbills" can be found in the annals of Iowa Bird Life, Fall
1998, Volume 68, Number4, Page 135.

Good Birding,
