Early in the morning, warblers were plentiful in the sunlit trees
atop Squaw Creek Park's sledding hill, keeping me busy for a while.
Later they became spotty around the park and I totaled 12 species
for the day.
While checking the white spruces on the sledding hill, a small
flock of 4 RED CROSSBILLS (2fm,m,juv.) landed in front of me giving
me quite a surprise. They began plucking the green cones, inverting
them and taking bites. Oddly they weren't interested in mature ones
that were abundant. Later I returned and witnessed the nomadic birds
leave, flying to the north and jipping all the way.
