While scoping out shorebirds at Cardinal Marsh this evening, I spotted a couple rusty-colored birds skulking in the grass behind some sleeping killdeers. Zeroing in on their key features, I was pleased to see my first buff-breasted sandpipers. Thanks to nearby neighbor and birder Ellen Bell who had a handy telephone, Dennis Carter was able to drive out and add a new bird to his lengthy Winneshiek County list. 3 sandhill cranes and 3 stilt sandpipers were also good finds among the regulars - good numbers of pectoral and semi-palmated sandpipers included in the busy shorebird mix.
