This AM, a single Buff-breasted Sandpiper was observed actually foraging knee-deep in shallow water along the edge of B Pool @ Union Slough NWR, behavior I've never seen before. It was picking some sort of bits off the surface of the water as it walked along for several minutes. Buffies always look like they're trying to avoid getting their feet dirty when they walk on land, but this little guy appeared to be wearing gloppy black mud galoshes on his normally golden-yellow feet. Something eventually spooked it (something always does!), and then it ran back up on the shore to the green stuff where it seemed to be more comfortable.
