I birded my way from Ames to Spirit Lake and back today. Highlights included a juv Yellow-crowned Night-Heron just west of Bradgate (Humboldt Co.), a Merlin near Stanhope, 15 American Avocets at Trumbull Lake, 2 Marbled Godwits at Mud Lake, and Red-necked Phalaropes at 4 locales. Migrant passerines were scarce.
