I just witnessed 2 hummingbirds at our east window feeder and I was amazed to
see that the bird sitting on the feeder would not move, even while the bully
bird pecked his head and back repeatedly. This actually went on for several
MINUTES. The feeder bird was not eating, but stayed on the feeder with its beak
open, complaining at the bully. The bully bird was chattering and when the
feeder bird wouldn't move, it actually started pulling on the feathers on the
back of the feeder bird's neck!
The feeder bird looked smaller to me, but its wings weren't spread, so it's
hard to tell. They both look like females-I haven't seen males for several days.
The bully bird didn't quit till I walked toward the window. The feeder bird
stayed and was able to drink from the feeder till it chose to fly away.
Usually, I see a bully bird simply chase the other bird away. Maybe it's
common, but I have never seen a hummer withstand a physical attack like that.
It's interesting that neither one was willing to go to one of our other hummer
feeders.
