At my favorite local fall sparrow-watching site, just past the main parking lot
at McCoy Wildlife Area near Boone, in 10 minutes yesterday I found both adult
and juvenile Eastern Towhees, Song Sparrows, Lincoln’s Sparrows, Chipping
Sparrows, Field Sparrows and one adult Henslow’s Sparrow (along with several
female and juvenile Indigo Buntings pretending to be sparrows). No
Zonotrichias with them yet, but within the next couple of weeks I’d expect to
also find a couple of those species plus Fox Sparrows joining here in this
great flock site. There are a couple of nice brush piles and thickets on the
west (right) side as you walk in the entrance road, with a re-created prairie
on the east side, so about a 50-yard stretch is always loaded with sparrows in
late September-October.
