Iowa RBA birds reported from Saturday, September 22, through Friday, September 28, 2012:

This is a handy tool for anyone making a birding trip or otherwise into the state of Iowa. ************************ Species in ALL CAPS can be classified into three categories in the state of Iowa: 1) UNRECORDED, ACCIDENTAL or Casual; 2) A RARE but regular species; or 3) record early or late date or unusual for time of year. Any species with three asterisks (***species***) would represent a first record for Iowa (UNRECORDED) and should be observed and documented very carefully. Species with two asterisks (**species**) are species that are either ACCIDENTAL, CASUAL, or a rare regular species, and should also be documented. Species with one asterisk (*species) should have some details of the observation provided. EAST: LINN COUNTY: A NELSONS SPARROW was seen at Squaw Creek Park on the 25th. NORTHEAST: BLACK HAWK COUNTY: A SPOTTED TOWHEE was seen in a yard just northeast of Waterloo on the 22nd. SOUTH CENTRAL: APPANOOSE COUNTY: A NELSONS SPARROW was seen at Buckshot Lake at Sedan Bottoms on the 23rd. CENTRAL: JASPER COUNTY: A probable YELLOW RAIL was seen at Neal Smith NWR on the 22nd. Specifically, it was seen on the edge of the paved trail right next to the visitor center halfway between the visitor center flagpoles and the first wooden info kiosk along the prairie trail that leads off to the east. It was perhaps 25 yards from the visitor center. POLK COUNTY: An ARCTIC TERN and a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER were seen at Saylorville on the 22nd. Specifically, the ARCTIC TERN was seen from Sandpiper Beach. The ARCTIC TERN was last seen at Sandpiper Beach on the 24th. WEST: GUTHRIE COUNTY: NELSONS SPARROWS were seen at Lakin Slough on the 21st. AUDUBON COUNTY: 3 BREWERS BLACKBIRDS were seen in a rural cemetery on the 26th. NORTHWEST: WOODBURY COUNTY: 3 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen at the Dairy Ponds on the 21st. KOSSUTH COUNTY: A PINE WARBLER was seen at Riverview Cemetery on the 22nd. CLAY COUNTY: A VEERY was seen in a yard in Spencer on the 23rd. 10 AMERICAN AVOCETS were seen at Trumbull Lake on the 23rd. 4 NELSONS SPARROWS were seen at Kirchner Prairie on the 23rd.
