Just got back from Northern Wisconsin Wednesday night. You can probably
thank me for bringing the cool weather back.
We did have some nice birding. Saw a Parasitic Jaeger at Wisconsin Point -
Superior WI. Also, Caspian Terns there. Ther were still hundreds of White
Pelicans on Lake Albert Lea along Highway I 35 late Wednesday. White flocks
all over the lake. Seems very late for that far north. Ruffed Grouse were
common with some right outside our cabin door. One thing we have noted is
the increase in Wild Turkey numbers the last few years in far north
Wisconsin. Used to see one bird, 2 or 3 times a year. Now seeing large
broods and groups of Toms all along the roads and highways. The broods were
in the 8-14 category. While traveling a stretch of Hwy 77 through Sawyer
and Washburn county (50 miles), we saw at least 10 broods.
Lots of Yellow-rumped warblers still present way up north. Many Sandhill
Cranes and Trumpeter Swans at Crex Meadows.
In the mamal category, saw Porcupines twice (many more if you count dead
ones along the highways). Flying Squirrels were common at my feeders with
at least 5 coming in each night. Bear scarce (hunting season).
I did get some images of the Jaeger that fairly decent. Also, new Flying
Squirrel photos with better quality and up in a Red Pine, not just at the
feeder (better background).
