This morning about 9:45, Jim and Sandy Kovanda found a Lesser Black-backed Gull
at Lake Manawa, Pottawattamie County. We saw it from about 10:30 to 11:30. It
was first found on the north canal on the west side of the lake. It was also
seen flying over on the main lake and then back again on the canal. It
appeared to be a first cycle bird. It was larger than the Ring-billed Gulls.
The wings were all dark gray with no white. The tail was white with a wide
black terminal band (and the middle tail feather was missing). The head was
white and the bill was all black. The neck and breast had brown speckling. A
Western Grebe and 3 Horned Grebes were also present.
