Keep an eye on those late hummers, Janet! You never know what might show up late. That's how we managed to help document the first record of Anna'a hummingbird in Iowa a couple of years ago - pretty thrilling for us.
This surprising bird showed up at our feeder on Halloween Day for about an hour, long enough for us to get a few not-very-good photographs and then spent the better part of two weeks at Aaron Brees' home a couple of blocks away. Aaron was the one that got it positively identified and did the heavy lifting on documentation. Many people from all over the Midwest got to see this Iowa first during that time. One thing I learned from Aaron, besides his identification help, is to leave those nectar feeders up if it doesn't freeze and that those late hummers may be something other than the usual ruby-throats.
