My field guides give the following clues. . . . most from their range
maps, but some from text.
Birds of East Asia by Mark Brazil, 2009: this species found in
eastern China, all of Korea.
Birds of Southeast Asia by Craig Robson, 2005: No map, but range
description states " N and E Myanmar (Burma).
Field Guide to the Birds of China, 2000: Most, if not all of China;
central Asia north of Himalayas; Korea; Taiwan and Japan (probably
introduced to both). We were fortunate to to have excellent looks
what is there called the Common Pheasant, on Nov. 22, 2008, during a
bird-a-thon fundraiser for the first Chinese non-profit bird
conservation initiative.
Birds of Europe by Mullarney, Svensson, Zetterstrom & Grant, 1999:
Text states "introduced in Europe (in Britain probably from 11th/12th
century); wild populations occur E Black Sea and in Caucuss, eastward
to China." Map shows range covers all or nearly all of Europe east to
west, and north to south from southern Scandinavia to Italy.
Field Guide to New Zealand Birds says "introduced in 1842."
