Two Surf Scoters were with coots off Marble Beach at Spirit Lake this
morning and I had 21 Horned Grebes plus one Eared Grebe in a
circumnavigation of that body of water. This afternoon there were 24 Horned
Grebes at Lost Island Lake in Palo Alto county and 1450 Ruddy Ducks actually
outnumbered the coots there. At Trumbull Lake in Clay county the recent
rains put a little water back into that dry lakebed and the birds were
taking advantage. Four Am Golden Plover were with one Black-bellied Plover
and there were several Greater Yellowlegs scattered about and a group of
eight Dunlin. Overall, I had 19 waterfowl species which included a number
of Greater Scaup with other divers at the south end of Spirit Lake.
