Last Sunday morning I was birding at Bacon Creek Park (Sioux City). In a
wooded area I heard a faint, high-pitched "tsii". I began scouring the
nearby tree trunks for the Brown Creepers that I commonly see throughout
the winter there. Then some movement high in the treetops caught my eye.
Small birds, tinier than the nearby Black Capped Chickadee, were flitting
rapidly from branch to branch as they foraged. It was grey and overcast,
so lighting was poor for identification. With persistence, however, I was
able to clearly see the yellow cap of one of this group of 5-6
Golden-crowned Kinglets. That high-pitched "tsii" will have me looking for
more than Brown Creepers in early spring!
