After having to scrap another DNR bird survey a McCoy Wildlife Area for the
fifth time in three weeks (because of all the turkey hunters in the woods), I
went on a photo safari to Bjorkboda Marsh on the Boone-Hamilton Co. line.
There I found an American Bittern, several Soras, Marsh Wrens, & Wilson’s
Phalaropes, plus numerous waterfowl. In a private marshy pasture a mile west I
happened upon a very cooperative and photogenic Cattle Egret—it posed for many
photos and made for some good laughs when being chased by a little calf.
Another mile farther west I photographed a badger peeking out of his den along
the roadside. So now I’m rather glad those turkey hunters kept me out of the
woods, or I may not have seen all this!
