This morning I hit Ashworth Park, Waterworks Park, Brown’s Woods and Walnut
Woods State Park and Maffit Reservoir looking for birds and finding about 60
species. Warblers were somewhat scarce, with just 9 species in my total. But
included were a FOY Cerulean, a FOY Kentucky and at least 10-11
Chestnut-sided—the most of that species I’ve ever seen at one place in central
Iowa (all were at Ashworth Park). I also found a male Summer Tanager sitting
on a branch right above the Bill Riley Trail, just about a hundred yards south
of the trailhead parking lot at Ashworth.

At Brown’s Woods I found 3 male Scarlet Tanagers, one of which generously posed
for nice portrait photos. I also had 4 vireos at Brown’s
Woods—Yellow-throated, Warbling, Philadelphia, and Red-eyed. Finally, at
Maffit Reservoir I found a lone (and quite late) male Red-breasted Merganser.
