2:30 a.m. I was awakened by a very persistent mockingbird. I have neither heard nor seen a mockingbird in Iowa before (except for one brief possible sighting), but this one was unmistakeable. He did an amazing series of songs and calls, and kept me awake for about an hour! I even woke up my nonbirding husband, who also heard him. I commented to my husband that this mockingbird sure can sing more songs than the ones in NYC. He chuckled and said, "Yes, but those can do better car alarms!" When we lived in NYC, there was a mockingbird that frequented our back yard one winter. He would sit on the fence and call to me until I threw him some grapes.
Anyway...I'll post again if I actually lay eyes on this one. I'm located about 5 miles south of Leon on Pleasanton Road, then two miles east on 260th Road in case anyone else wants to try to find him.
