Yesterday I celebrated my birthday in normal fashion with a big bird
day...except for the heat and humidity. It was 81 degrees and a dew point
in the 70's when we started at 5 AM. It warmed up nicely from there and
luckily we had a pretty good breeze from the west southwest. Total species
at 103 was down a little from normal and the birds were really quiet with
little pre-dawn activity. I'm sure they were hot, too.

There were literally hundreds of Eastern Kingbirds everywhere we went and
one Western Kingbird at the town of Cornell. We pulled into Trumbull Lake
after lunch expecting a shorebird bonanza but it was bone dry so only a few
Killdeer, Pectorals and Leasts were there. Mudflats at High Lake in Emmet
county produced the shorebirds with nine Red-necked Phalaropes and one
Wilson's Phalarope included and notable. Wilson also had two each of
warblers and snipe on the day.
