This afternoon as I was jumping the battery on a car in the front yard, I looked about 15 feet away and saw what I thought was a Hairy Woodpecker banging at something on the ground. But as I kept watching it was a beautiful Northern Shrike who was working on a house sparrow. I was quite surprised. But the shrike was pretty focused on his prey. A catbird and a robin left a few days ago with the last cold wave. Replaced by tree sparrows with the snow.
Fun winter birdwatching!
