The DeSoto CBC was held Sunday, December 15th. We had great coverage this
time with 26 participants covering everyplace that could be covered. The one
disappointment was that we were not able to cover Boyer Chute NWR due to a
hunt. Regardless, we all had a fantastic count with the remaining area in
the circle covered very well. DeSoto had two areas of open water which they
have kept open for waterfowl. 0ver 20,000 mallards were there plus 12
trumpeter swans. The Fort Calhoun sector in Nebraska found another 2
Trumpeters and added to the waterfowl species list totaling 12 species in
all. Nine species of sparrows were seen plus a count week swamp sparrow.

Highlights:

38 red-headed woodpeckers-previous high was 8 and only seen 7 years
previously.

Thanks to all the people who counted this year. The success of the count was
due to your effort!
