Yesterday the Neal Smith NWR CBC took place in difficult conditions as the wind came up early and things cooled off. Although I'm still expecting a few feeder reports, our unofficial total number of species was 40, which is about average. Most notable were three YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS found by Jim Sinclair and Rick Trieff, which was a count first. Other good birds: Northern Harrier 1 Rough-legged Hawk 2 Red-headed Woodpecker 2 Eastern Bluebird 7 American Tree Sparrow 884 (record high) White-throated Sparrow 5 (record high) White-crowned Sparrow 7 (previously only 1 ever found on count) Lapland Longspur 7 Meadowlark sp.. 5 Red-winged Blackbird 4 Brown-headed Cowbird 1
No Short-eared Owls, which is not surprising as I haven't seen them much this year. Thanks to all the participants who helped! -- Karen Viste-Sparkman Wildlife Biologist Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge P.O.
