Birders, The family and I took a lap around Saylorville this morning. I was hoping for some shorebirds along the beaches, but there werent many other than Spotted Sandpipers. I did have a few FOY's including Wilson's Warbler, Red-eyed Vireo, Northern Parula, Swainson's Thrush and Gray-cheeked Thrush. At Sandpiper there were about 45 Franklin's Gulls and an equal number of Caspian Terns.
My wife Anna has been home recuperating from knee surgery, and yesterday while I was at work, she called me to say there was an "orange and yellow" bird feeding on oranges that was not an Oriole. She and I both suspected it might be a tanager, so she got a photo of the bird, and after conferring with Aaron Brees and Jay Gilliam and a field guide, it was determined to be a female Summer Tanager.
