I birded under-birded Howard County today, stopping at three
locations in the western half of the county. On the morning, I could
only find 5 migrant species. It really felt like summer has arrived.
Some notes:
Lake Hendricks
* Olive-sided Flycatcher
* Alder Flycatcher
* Veery
* Scarlet Tanager pair
* Tennessee Warbler, the only migrant warbler
Lylah's Marsh
* 1 Sandhill Crane
* Le Conte's Sparrow (singing)
* probable Bell's Vireo along the Wapsi Trail would not show itself
* a slight bit of shorebird habitat at the north end was deserted today
Hayden Prairie
* a disappointing place to be. way too much woody vegetation is
transforming this formerly pristine place.
* a few Sedge Wrens, many Yellow-throats, Red-winged Blackbirds,
Cowbirds, Bobolinks,
* no Grasshopper Sparrows, no Henslow's Sparrows, no Clay-colored Sparrows
* no Dickcissels, no meadowlarks, and nothing like Harriers or Upland
Sandpipers,
Riceville
* Eurasian Collared-Doves in the eastern neighborhoods.
