Hi all,
Reid and I drove around the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge this morning
looking for longspurs . The area just south of the visitor's center has
recently been burned, but the land just north of the visitor's center and all
the way up to the edge of the road which runs through the buffalo enclosure was
burned last fall and it was on this road we ran into a large flock of longspurs
(approximately 200-300) which consisted mostly of Lapland Longspurs with some
Smith's Longspurs mixed in. A couple of times some of them settled on the side
of the road so you could study the two species very well. The best place we
found for viewing was looking south towards the visitor's center from the road
through the buffalo enclosure.
