The article that Sameer brought to our attention is almost entirely positive, but it notes that in the first large XO deployment in Ethiopia, nobody told the children about collaboration. A group of them got quite excited by their first demo of Chat and other shared activities, and is now passing the word to the other children.
We need to have a story about a child learning to use the XO, and teaching friends and family. We could put a video together with all of the essential bits and some of the positive social and educational outcomes. It needs to have the facts, the human interest, and the points that teachers and ministries need to absorb to get the most out of the program. Or perhaps we need a global Mr. Rogers to introduce children doing something different every day. But that is for later. Who wants to work on the first script? Some possible topics: Opening the XO. Turning it on. Doing something else while it boots. The wireless neighborhood Friends The Journal Bringing up and dismissing the frame. Starting Activities. Switching Activities. Keyboards and Languages Music keyboard Saving state in the Journal. Sharing Activities. Sharing files. Brief intro to selected Activities Book mode with screen rotate Using the XO as a mirror. Using the XO as a light source. Charging the XO battery. Renewable electric power Village Internet Collaboration in the classroom Tile-based programming. Teaching parents. TTS for literacy--XO reads stories to children and family. Cultural sharing and preservation. Some lessons, such as Alan Kay on Galilean gravity. Repair The big question is, what do we know from the field that teachers and students have trouble finding out about in various circumstances? What have I missed in the list above?
