This is actually a topic of great interest. Its exactly the kind of application of distributed intelligence to save the planet I'm expecting and hoping to emerge from networking. In line with this, I'm monitoring http://www.globoamazonia.com/ - a site put by Globo Brasil television network, that aggregates reports of illegal logging and out of control fires. There is a bias to the coast, where computers and internet have penetration, but I've recently spent 6 months in the Peru/Bolivia/Brasil border, and it was dry season and air was filled with smoke. The situation is really bad there.
