My suggestion was not a literacy category, but 3 of them: beginner-
literacy, intermediate-literacy, and high-literacy. Something like a
wikipedia slice would be high-literacy, something like paint would
be beginner literacy. This would let teachers search for things
suitable for their age ranges. These categories would not be
exclusive with the other categories.
Yep, so a thread of the meeting was about the possibility of using the
ASLO category feature as a way to indicate 'level', being careful not
to use 'age' as the level factor as it (seems to be) pedagogically
rough terrain to suggest age has anything to do with learning ability.

Sorry, I was meant to be following up on this from last weeks
ActivityTeam meeting, where we didn't get to any specific conclusions
and had to move on with the agenda. Note that the current ASLO allows
a developer to pick upto 3 categories for their Activity to be tagged
in, I quite like the restriction, but I understand it is possible to
take this limit off.
Here's the feedback so far:
Current ASLO (from original OLPC wiki): Search & Discovery, Documents,
News, Chat, mail and talk, Media creation, Programming, Maths &
Science, Maps & Geography, Media players, Games, Teacher tools.
Gabriel Eirea: Artistic, Natural sciences, Social sciences, Language,
Mathematics, Second language/Foreign languages.
Eben Eliason: Math, Science, Language, Artistic, Programming,
Communication, Neighbourhood, Writing
garycmartin (me): Reading, Writing, Art, Maths, Science, Programming,
Geography, Communication, Games.
nrp: Utilities.
I also liked the suggestion for a Literacy category, that could
potentially be used to replace Reading and Writing (keeping the list
shorter). Also the terms Numbers, and Words came up as possible
alternatives, and I just noticed we'd missed Music.
So, summing up so far, this could give us something like:
Art
Communication
Games
Geography
Literacy
Maths
Music
Programming
Science
Utilities
I'd love to see some more feedback on this so we get a good robust set
of categories with an educational slant. Now ideally, actual users
would provide the tagging information for Activities, but that's a
whole 'nother ball game to get into ;-)
