This doesn't happen for me with 883. I opened Browse, clicked on Activities, searched for IRC, clicked download. When it had finished, I went to the journal and the IRC activity was there. The IRC activity was also in the home view. I used Erase in the journal, and the IRC activity remained in the home view. The mesh icons are in the neighbourhood view immediately after boot. I did not need to connect to an access point first. I hadn't already picked an access point, so one of the mesh icons automatically started.
