Dear fellow geoscientists,
As a part of IAGI 31st Annual Convention programs which will be held in Surabaya on
Sept 30 - Oct 2 2002, we also conduct several interesting Geological Field Trip
Programs, both pre-convention and post-convention.

PRE-CONVENTION FIELDTRIPS

1. Recent Carbonate in Madura Strait

Day/date : Saturday-Sunday, September 28-29, 2002

                               Location : Pasirputih Area Situbondo

Trip Leader : Wahyoe Soepri Hantoro (Geotek LIPI)

Co-Trip Leader : Ir. Sofyan (UNTAG)

Cost : Rp. 1.750.000,-

Participants : 20

This field trip is designed for participants who are interested in the formation of
recent carbonate. The first day trip the committee will serve trip participant who has
neither diving license nor diving experience to follow the diving short training. Each
four of those participants will be guided by one diving instructor. The participants
also have a chance to see a modern carbonate setting in Pasir putih area Situbondo,
including observation on faunal diversity and type of carbonate sand and reefal
setting.

2. Prophyry Gold Copper in Tumpangpitu Banyuwangi

Day/date : Saturday-Sunday, September 28-29, 2002

Trip Leader : Dibiansyah (Independent Consultant)

Co-Trip Leader : Ir. Marcilinus Purwanto Heru Setiawan (HACKMAN)

Cost : Rp. 950.000,-

Participants : 25

Tumpangpitu hill and its surroundings are covered by andecitic to dacitic volcanic,
volcaniclastic and sediment. It is intruded by stock and small batholit, which have
granodiorit to diorite composition. Occurrence of alteration is shown by the presence
of chlorite, epidote, aclinolite, calcite, leucone, and silica. Through this trip,
participants will be able to observe the presence of epithermal and porphyry copper
gold at the same location.

POST-CONVENTION FIELD TRIP

1. Geology of Bromo Volcano

Day/date : Thursday-Friday, October 3-4, 2002

Trip Leader : Edy Mulyadi (Dit. Volcanology)

Co-Trip Leader : Swasta Katriatmojo (EMRS)

Cost : Rp. 800.000,-

Participants : 25

Mt Bromo is an active volcano located at about 145 km south Surabaya in Probolinggo
Regency. This volcano has a top of 2,382 m above sea level, known as for breath taking
view of the sun rising. Geologically, the appearance of creater in the middle of the
huge caldera of Tengger Mountain is very interesting. During the trip, participants
will be able to observe the genesis of this volcano.

2. Batu Hijau Copper-Gold Porphyry Deposits, Newmont Nusa Tenggara.

Day/date : Thursday-Friday, October 3-6, 2002

Trip Leader : Arief Perdanakusumah (Senior Geologist)

Co-Trip Leader : Dr. Arief Rachmansyah (Unibraw)

Cost : Rp. 3.000.000,-

Participants : 20

Batu Hijau is a mine located in West and of Sumbawa Island, Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.
Batu Hijau is a large porphyry copper-gold deposit, which contains a mineable 0.40
g/t gold (Clode et al., 1999). The deposit was discovered by Newmont Mining
Coorporation in 1990 and was scheduled to commence production late in 1999.

The Batu Hijau Project involves the development of 200 million tonnes per annum
copper/gold mine in the coastal mountains of south west Sumbawa. The project will mine
ore from a large open pit centered on the mountain of Batu Hijau. Ore from the mine
will be transported to the 132, 000 tonnes per day concentrator via a 5,5 km overland
conveyor. The concentrate will be transported about 18 km to storage and port
facilities at Benette Bay. The Benette Bay facilities are linked to the mine and
township by a 25 km access road which traverses steep mountainous terrain. The mine
waste dumps, which ultimately will contain about 3.5 billion tonnes of soil and rock,
are to be constructed in three valleys close to the mine. The waste dump management
facilities include a number of dams, water diversions and acid water treatment
facilities.

3. Petroleum Geology of East Java Basin

Day/date : Thursday-Saturday, October 3-5, 2002

Trip Leader : Ir. Muchammad Johanes K. (PPT Migas Cepu)

Co-Trip Leader : Ir. Kukuh Sujatmiko (EMRS)

Cost : Rp. 2.500.000,-

Participants : 20

Recently, east Java basins become very interesting for oil industry (petroleum
geologist). Discoveries of Sukawati and Banyuurip fields, which have been indicated as
giant field, have challenged explorationists to know more about geology of east Java
basin. This field trip is designed for those who want to know about petroleum system
and potential hydrocarbon in old and deeper formation in the region.
