Seminar's summary:
"THE DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATION SYSTEM IN GEOLOGICAL ENGINEERING / EARTH RESOURCES
SEMINAR" YOGYAKARTA, 17 MARCH 2003

It is believed that geology departments all over the world must continue to play an
important role in education and research work, accommodating themselves with their new
economic surroundings. All participants believed that they will be able to cope with
problems better and enhance the levels of education and research work by furthering
international multilateral cooperation. Therefore, cooperative works in education and
research programs among Asian countries will be very fruitful.
The restructuring within a department is a plan for strength and development in the
future. It promotes institutional structure flexibility, academic accountability and
academic-industry linkage; these are essential elements of university in moving toward
university autonomy.

Role of Indonesian Association of Geologist in Geological Education:
Since its establishment in 2000, IAGI-KNPGI has a major role in the achievement and
projection of educational development on geology; and the achievement, capability and
prosperity of geological research and investigations as well as their geologist and
researcher. The Vision of KNPGI (National Committee on Indonesian Geology Education),
and its primary mission for facilitating and for improving education and co-operation
activities, in turn will create a fruitful condition for the moment initiation of an
education and research under the KNPGI authorization and management, thereby in the
next term, they have to be maintained and established.

To meet with industry needs, geoscientists need to be introducing with:
1. Differing technical competency (knowledge) for exploration, development and
exploitation
2. Workplace competency (skill) or industry link
3. Right attitude and behaviors depending on the business nature and requirement
4. Concerns and understanding on safety, environment and community development
Three aspects of University Programs that are considered as of interest to the
Industry:
1. Development of professionals equipped with the knowledge, skills and
competencies in preparation for careers in the business
2. Development of student programs that will add to the knowledge base of the
resources wealth and potential and help guide future exploration and exploitation
3. Interaction between Companies and Learning Institutes that help to expose and
promote the facts of exploitation and exploration to the public through these
institutes
