Porosity in Rocks Containing Clay - Effective or Total

� This presentation clarifies the proper definition and use of porosity,
clay and shale in formation evaluation and the proper use in calculating
water saturation.
� In the literature porosity is defined many different ways.� For
formation evaluation the primary terms are total and effective porosity.
Log analysts define effective porosity differently than engineers and
geologists.� Porosity is also measured several different ways in core
analysis.� To add to the confusion log analysts use the term shale and
clay, many times interchangeably and many times erroneously assume that
all water in shale is clay bound water.
� The measurement of porosity, shale and clay from core will be described.
The proper use and integration with well logs to obtain results consistent
with core analysis will covered along with the proper log analysis results
to use for reservoir engineering purposes.

� Bob has thirty-seven years of industry experience. In his current
position he is responsible for providing Baker Atlas with current industry
outlook and for developing and managing critical strategic partnerships by
interacting with executive leaders from customer companies, universities,
technical societies, government agencies and industry analysts. His recent
positions have been Senior Director Marketing Services and Chief
Petrophysicist. ��He was consultant for seventeen years as president of
two companies before joining Baker Atlas in 1998. �His formation
evaluation experience includes field engineer, sales, operations
management, interpretation research and development, marketing, software
and consulting. He is general chairman for the annual SPWLA International
meeting in Galveston for 2003.� He is also a member of SPE, AAPG, SEG and
EAGE.� He has a BS in mechanical engineering from California State
University at Long Beach.
